Audition Brief

Roald Dahl’s treasured tale is now Australia’s Golden Ticket!
Australian theatre producers John Frost, Craig Donnell, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Langley Park Productions and Neal Street Productions will be bringing the spectacular new musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre next summer.

APPLICATIONS

Submissions are to be made only via the Charlie & the Chocolate Factory website – Please proceed to the bottom of the page to find the online application form.

SUBMISSIONS CLOSE: Midnight, Sunday 25st MARCH 2018

Successful applicants will receive appointment times 7 days prior to state based auditions.

AUDITIONS DATE

3rd – 7th April 2018 – SYDNEY
9th – 13th April 2018 – MELBOURNE

Rehearsals to commence late November 2018 in SYDNEY.

PRINCIPAL ROLES

WILLY WONKA
Male – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 40s
The sly, charming, eternally youthful star of the show. Lithe, eccentric, and remarkably physical. Must have the ability to be filled with boundless energy and be physically light on his feet. Has a larger than life persona that can go from charming and comical, to magically mysterious and dark.
Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor

 

CHARLIE BUCKET
Boy – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 10
Sweet, smart, hopeful and loving. A boy with wonderful innocence and vulnerability. Honest actor and an excellent singer with a naturally innocent voice.
Vocal Range: Unbroken/Unchanged

 

GRANDPA JOE
Male – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 60
Impish, remarkably physical (dance skills a plus), he is Charlie’s imaginative, fun, kind and loving grandfather. After many years being confined to a bed, his childish energy returns when Charlie finds the Golden Ticket.

 

MRS BUCKET
Female – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 30s
Charlie’s warm and kind-hearted mother. A worrier. Generous and loving. A great dancer.
Vocal Range: A distinctive pop/folk voice

 

AUGUSTUS GLOOP
Short, youthful ADULT male, to play a 9-12 year old boy; any ethnicity
Round and full-faced, but rampantly over-active despite his size. Speaks with a German accent. Excellent singer and comic actor.

 

MRS GLOOP
Female – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 30s-40s
Augustus’s German, moronic, Wagnerian mother. A huge presence with a huge voice. Mirthlessly smiles as though it were affixed to the front of her face. Fantastic singer and comedienne.
Vocal Range: Mezzo

 

VERUCA SALT
Short, youthful ADULT female to play a 9-12 year old girl; Any ethnicity
Vicious and beautiful. The Salts are Russian. Must be an EXCELLENT dancer (pointe) able to dance not only classical ballet, but also tear herself to shreds. Spends the entire show in pointe shoes. Comic actress with a character singing/screaming voice, comfortable with a Russian accent.

 

MR SALT
Male – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 30s-40s
Veruca’s tall, hilarious, eccentric, distracted, Russian father. Finds it impossible to say no, giving in to every ridiculous demand his daughter makes. Excellent comic actor.
Vocal Range: Baritone

 

VIOLET BEAUGREGARD
Short, youthful ADULT female to play a 9-12 year old girl. Oceanian or African ethnicity
While she’s physically tiny, she has a huge pop/R&B voice and great hip-hop dance skills. Confident, forward, and full of attitude. Great singer.
Vocal Range: Pop/RnB

 

MR BEAUREGARD
Male – Oceanian or African ethnicity
Playing Age: 30s-40s
Violet’s ineffectual father. Ignores his back-talking, insult-hurling daughter. Great mover.
Vocal Range: Soul/pop/R&B

 

MIKE TEAVEE
Short, youthful ADULT male to play a 9-12 year old boy; any ethnicity
A fireplug with a ridiculous amount of energy. Square, powerful, tiny, and terrifying. A voice that cuts through steel. Great physical comedian.
Vocal Range: Tenor

 

MRS TEAVEE
Female – Any ethnicity
Playing Age: 30s-40s
She needs amphetamines to get through the day and deal with her outrageous son.
Tense, extreme, and hilarious. Great singer.

 

ENSEMBLE ROLES

Ensemble MUST have a high level of dance experience/skill in the following:

  • Ballet technique
  • Jazz
  • Partner technique
  • Tumble/540* kicks (not essential for all)
